Western Medical Acupuncture

Western medical acupuncture is a therapeutic modality involving the insertion of fine needles; it is an adaptation of Chinese acupuncture using current knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology, and the principles of evidence based medicine. While western medical acupuncture has evolved from Chinese acupuncture, practitioners no longer adhere to the concepts such as yin and yang and circulation of qi and regard acupuncture as part of conventional medicine rather than a complete “alternative medical system" Acupuncture is many used for pain relief.

Western Medical Acupuncture stimulates the nerve in the skin, muscle and fascia and aids osteopathy by producing change in the mechanical and physiological use of the muscle at hand. It increases the release of the body’s natural pain killers- endorphin and serotonin, thus modifying the way pain signals are perceived.

Acupuncture is generally safe. Serious side effects are rare, less than one in 10,000 treatments. London Osteopathic Care only use single disposable needles. If acupuncture is used during treatment patients are asked for consent before treatment.

Western Medical Acupuncture can be used for a variety of conditions, but osteopaths in this practice tend to use it to enhance the effectiveness of their treatment.
