Lymphatic Drainage

What is Lymphatic Drainage?

Lympatic Drainage (LD) is a special type of treatment given by professionals in the medical feild (Osteopaths). The aim is to encourage the extra lymph fluid to move away from the swollen area so it can drain normally.

Lympatic Drainage performed by an Osteopath may be slighly different to one performed by a "Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) therapist".

A basic form of MLD will encourage the extra lymph fluid to move, however an Osteopath looks above and beyond at the restrictions and congestion within the body. This allows lymph fluid to move not only during treatment, but after treatment.

The Osteopath will look at the major joints that incourage movement of lymph fluid, making sure your every day movement is also helping and encouraging the movement of extra lymph fluid.

Lymphatic Drainage is both preventative and remedial and can enhance your well being.

What are the benefits of Lymphatic Drainage?

  • Is deeply relaxing

  • Promotes the healing of fractures, torn ligaments, sprains and lessens pain.

  • Can improve many chronic conditions: sinusitus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, acne and other skin conditions.

  • May strengthen the immune system as part of “detox” treatment.

  • Relieves fluid congestion: swollen ankles, tired puffy eyes and swollen legs due to pregnancy.

  • Is an effective component of the treatment and control of lymphoedema (which may occur after cancer treatment) and assists in conditions arising from venous insufficiency.

  • Promotes healing of wounds and burns and improves the appearance of old scars.

  • Minimises or reduces stretch marks.

  • Can be used to speed healing after cosmetic surgery.

Treatment with London Osteopathic Care?

The first visit will include a consultation, with full medical case history. This way the Osteopath can give you a number of options to treatment and how you would like to continue.

LD can be done for up to an hour a day or three times a week. A course may last for three or more weeks and can be repeated every three months or every year.

During your Lymphatic Treatments you must drink plenty of water.
